About Us

There is new blood – and big changes - in store for the Midlands’ longest serving bicycle outlet.

It’s astonishing how many businesses in Maritzburg and the Midlands are family-owned. Entrepreneurs, it seems, abound in the area – and keeping it in the family clearly has many advantages.

“Working with family means you’re all working for the same, common goal,” says Rod Boden, who with his son Travis  runs Howick Cycle & Gear, ‘the original bike shop’.

The outlet is a Midlands landmark. “We used to come here when I was a child,” said Travis.  My dad had always been an enthusiast, and I have been cycling since I was little. In fact I worked here on Saturdays as a schoolboy.”

Neville Schefermann, 34, is the fourth generation of the Schefermann’s to farm at Alford Farm in Vryheid. He joined the farming business in 2007 after completing a National Diploma and B-Tec Degree in Forestry. In 2015 he purchased the three family farms from his father and leases a fourth from his aunt in the district.

Nevilles attitude is to “think positive and stay positive”. He has poured this attitude into the revival of Howick Cycle and Gear.  Neville took ownership of the store in July 2016, keeping on the existing staff, noting that they share his passion in growing the business to that which cannot be rivalled.

Aside from a considerable increase in stock quantities, the new premises in Power Lane is a sight to behold. Staff members Rod, Travis, Sean and Sam share Neville’s’ vision for the future of the store and are dedicated to customer satisfaction.

Howick Cycle and Gear offer quality accessories and gear as well as a diverse range of new bikes.
